Who are we?
We are a small group of people made up of local councillors, environmental activists and community members. We are working to increase connection to the local environment to foster participation in protection and stewardship of our ecosystems. Dimpsey woods is one of several projects that feed into this bigger picture.
The Woodland Trust give away native saplings to organisations for free…..so why go to all the bother of creating Dimpsey woods?
This project was born of an awareness that increasing tree cover is vital, but increasing peoples connection to and appreciation of trees is an essential piece of that picture. By creating a connected community of grass-roots back yard tree growers, we can do both at once.
Its also accessible to anyone. You may not have land to reforest, or the ability to go on tree planting days, but almost everyone can pick up acorns in the park (or ask for seed through the Facebook group) and put them in a pot on a windowsill.
We hope that you will be a part of the Dimpsey Woods community. We’d love to see your trees or seeds that you have collected. We’d love to keep you up to date with where they have been planted. Please join the mailing list at the bottom of the page, and share your photos, seed swaps, growing tips and community projects in the Facebook Group, or through the Facebook Page.
We will need volunteers to look after the trees once they have been planted out. We would also like to increase the number of Tree Wardens in Torridge by offering training and support to interested community members. Tree wardens can help to to protect our existing trees by increasing the number of TPO’s (tree preservation orders) across Torridge. We would love one day to support the creation of a range of forestry jobs from Bee Keepers to Charcoal makers to Bodgers to Forest Schools.
We are always looking for and welcoming landowners that want to take a step to increase tree cover in Torridge. Our trees are free. If you have any ideas for reforesting then please get in touch.
