Why?

Why trees?

Globally we are losing about 18 million acres of forest every year. That’s equivalent to 27 football pitches every minute! But why does it matter?

Well, we need trees. But don’t take our word for it. Have a look at this summary of some of the reasons trees are both brilliant and necessary from One Tree Planted

The Woodland Trust give away hundreds of trees to schools and organisations for free every year, so why bother growing a couple of saplings in our back gardens? That doesn’t seem like enough! It’s hardly going to impact on 27 football pitches a minute right?

Well, most of us don’t have enough spare land to plant a new forest, or enough time to join a large scale tree planting organisation. In fact many of us wouldn’t even know where to begin. But most of us could collect an acorn from the park and put it in a pot somewhere outside and care for it long enough for to grow into a little sapling. And yes, alone that isn’t going to go very far. But we aren’t alone.

With over 30,000 dwellings in Torridge we can create a massive nursery. One tree per dwelling is around 20 hectares of woodland per year. Dimpsey Woods is an idea, but it’s an idea we can all be part of. Imagine that! 20 hectares worth of baby trees growing in a Torridge sized communi-tree nursery made up of all of our gardens. That’s about 37 football pitches!

We hope that you will be a part of the Dimpsey Woods community. We’d love to see your trees or seeds that you have collected. We’d love to keep you up to date with where they have been planted.
